Village of Fells Falls

Map of Fells Falls

Geography& Population

Fells Falls is a small village of about 200 people located in the mountain range north and west of Ellatraps. Normally, at the end of the harvesting seasons with temporary help from nearby farming holdings the population rises to close to 500 people. It is so named because of the Falls to the East of the city. It used to be a mining community, until the mines dried up. Now it has become a farming community. It produces the best bread around.

Food and Water

Due to its location near the Falls, there is an abundance of both food and water. Fresh water is normally retrieved from any number of local wells that have been dug. Food is a combination of agricultural and freshwater fish. There is always an abundance of potatoes, and wheat based products.

Industry

Fells Falls is home to numerous industries. They have a bustling wheatmill. There is also a bit of a fishing industry, and a few miners left. The town was originally built as a mining community. The mountains nearby held lots of valuable minerals, and gold! Fells Falls was a thriving community, until the mines died out. Along with the mines, the town died down, but didn't die completely, neither did the mining.

Security

Fells Falls is surrounded by a wooden palisade. The town-guard, headed by Dorian Matahey is fairly small in number. When there is a crisis, many of the men of the village will work volunteer shifts. Despite the meager security measures of the town, Fells Falls is relatively safe.

Despite being on a river, Fells Falls doesn't get the advantage of being on a shipping lane. As the river starts in the mountains near Fells Falls, there are no cities above it for boats to come down. Even if the river were extended north of Fells Falls, it would not make a good shipping lane because of the falls. The river does join with the Geothra Ocean, but there are no cities down-river from Fells Falls. The river is often used for fishing, however.

Leadership

The town is run by the mayor, and the captain of the guard. These two have been buddies for years. In fact, Dorian, the captain of the guard, got his post after Drooben was appointed Mayor. Some say that Mayor Drooben had something to do with his buddy getting the Captain position. Those under Dorian Matahey are very loyal to him. He is a good man, and very good at his job.

Major Sites

  1. Dunbie's Mill.  This building is on the west side of the river, at the edge of town. All of the wheat farmers, which is most of them, bring their wheat here to be ground. Grune Dunbie, the owner, makes quite a profit from the farmers around. His wife runs a bakery attached to the mill. Some of the farmers sell her the wheat they have ground to make delicious bread. Some farmers, when times are bad, pay for their grinding with a donation to Gretta Dunbie.
Gretta's bread is famous all around Fells Falls, and has been rumored to have been talked about, and envied even in Halus! The Dunbie's also raise chickens, so that Gretta has fresh eggs, and they own a cow for her fresh milk. Gretta also sells some of her fresh eggs, and milk to the townsfolk, when she has more than she can use.
  2. Old Mine. The mine entrances are still in the mountain. They are actually still used by a few reluctant miners. One of those is Old man Hattaway. He was the man who discovered the valuable deposits of gold, and silver. He lives up near the mine, in an old shack. Most of his day is spent down in the mountain. He comes to town about once a month, and he always has some gold, or silver to spend. A lot of people think that he is crazy, and he is just wasting his time up there. But they don't care, because he smells bad. Apparently, he doesn't bathe very often, and he likes to work in the mine for long hours. People say they have seen a light in the cave entrance all night long, and they are sure that old man Hattaway has stayed in there the whole night, looking for more gold.
  3. Wheat Storage.  This is one of the few stone buildings in Fells Falls. It sits on the west end of town. A rather inconvenient place for it, since it is opposite the mill. The storage building was put there after the old one flooded, and the years crop was lost. The storage used to be a wooden building near Dunbie's mill, but about 10 years ago, there was a large flood, and the building was flooded, and was also irreparable. The town decided that it would be a better idea to put the storage somewhere not so close to the river. It was then rebuilt on a hill at the west end of town.
All of the farmers of Fells Falls store their wheat here. The town manages the storage. When a farmer brings in wheat to be stored, it is weighed, and recorded in a ledger. Then, at the end of the year, the money brought in from the sale of the wheat is divvied up between the farmers.
  4. Temple to Mother Ge.  This is more of a shrine than a temple. The city of Fells Falls cannot support a full blown temple, but they take good care of their 'temple' to Mother GE Most of the city comes and pays homage to the sacred Mother. She is what gives them their livelihood. The small building is located in the center of the town. It is the most ornate building in all of Fells Falls.
Atkin is the head priest here. He, along with De'Lorna, keep the temple in good shape. They are devoted to making sure that there are no leaks in the roof. They are also very helpful when harvest time comes. They are always ready to lend a hand when one of the farmers needs help getting his crop in.
  5. The Behemoth Inn  This is the best Inn in town. They boast the best food, and always have a good supply of Gretta Dunbie's bread. The Behemoth is smaller than the other inn in town, The Sunken Log, but is much more cozy. The Behemoth is also more expensive than the Sunken Log, because of their fine cuisine, and larger rooms. It has a medium size dining area, and common room coming off from it. Many of the townsfolk come there for a nice dinner. The Behemoth Inn stays in business, not from selling rooms to travelers, but from their food. Most trailers stay at the Sunken Log, because the prices are much more reasonable.
  6. The Golden Nugget Inn  This is a larger, two story Inn. It has, on the first floor, a large Tankard room, and common room. Most trailers and nary-do-wellers like to stay here. The prices are reasonable, and there are lots of other rowdy people around. The people who live nearby often complain of the noise coming from the inn at all hours of the night. The Inn seems rather large for such a small town, but it was built while the town was a bustling lumber community. It is built mostly of wood, but does have some stonework. The proprietor of the Sunken Log is not a woman to mess with. Loretta is a very large woman, who bathes irregularly, at best. She sometimes works as security for the Inn when she's in the mood. Most of the time, she is in a good mood, and is very easy to get along with, but she has a short temper, and has been known to physically throw people out of her Inn for saying the wrong thing.
  7. Hobble's Stables.  Hobble, the owner of the stables, is a very diminutive man. He is very weasely, and most of the townsfolk do not like him. He has a large set of stables, but normally only houses about two horses. Again, these were built when the town was much larger. Hobble took them over when the previous owner went where the lumber was. He charges an outrageous amount to keep your horse there, and it smells like he hasn't cleaned the barn in years.
  8. The Haunted Corner  As the town shrunk, because of the dying lumber industry, many buildings became abandoned. Shortly after the exodus, a section of town, on the west end, caught fire. The town hurried to put out the fire before it took the entire town with it. They managed to save most of the town, but many of the buildings here weren't able to be saved. Because the town had shrunk, and there were many open houses in the town, the people that lived there moved into the other houses in town. Many people died in the fire as well. This section of town is avoided by most everyone because of the reported hauntings there.
  9. Barnes Smithy  This building is the only metal works for miles. It was a thriving smithy when the town was a thriving mining town, now Barnes doesn't get much work. He is called upon mostly to make hoes, and shovels now. He still makes horse shoes for the work horses, but weapons are a rarity. Barnes and his wife were smart enough to save up some of the money that they had earned while the town was thriving, so they are doing fine. They have talked about moving, but they both like it there, and Barnes is getting older, and just wants to keep doing what he is.
  10. Miss Bonny's. This is the local bordello. It was established when Fells Falls was a big mining community. The miners would frequent The Gaping Cave, whenever they got the chance. Miss Bonny is the proprietor. She has run it since the beginning. Many of the townsfolk wish she would pack up and leave, but Miss Bonny likes it in Fells Falls, and she is still earning a tidy profit. The Gaping Cave is located near the Haunted Corner, in a beautiful, large, well kept house. To the passerby it looks nothing like a place of business.
